In the words of Trey: “I’m best known for…StuckInCustoms.com, which has become the #1 Travel Photography Blog on the Internet. I started early with the sharing. Google has tracked billions of views, which is mind-boggling to me! At least a few of those views are from my mom, who visits the site many times per day! My work first became popular after I had the honor of having the first HDR photo ever to hang in the Smithsonian. After that, I was fortunate enough to be represented by Getty (who I have since dumped because they take 80%), been featured on the BBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, and NBC, and have had numerous showings around the world. I am known generally for the unique way in which I capture and process the world around me.”

In our chat we touch on listening to your inner child, the importance of sustainable lifestyle design, experimenting to find your own style, and more!

I want to give a huge thank you to Trey for taking the time to chat with us! I consider myself as much a student as the listening audience, and appreciate him sharing his extensive knowledge.

“Your final photo should be a reflection of your ever-evolving personality, your ever-evolving history, and your ever-evolving creative self.” -Trey Ratcliff

Top 3 Tips From the Interview:

1. Listen to your inner child.

We all have personal, creative instincts, so do not ignore that voice. This is what makes you different from everyone else. Your job is not to make everyone happy. Your job is to be you.

2. Consider your lifestyle design. Is it sustainable?

Taking on clients as a “freelancer” can be a very different lifestyle than pursuing alternate forms of income, such as image licensing, selling your photography as art, writing e-books or creating online courses. Consider how you will make money, and how it will affect the structure of your life.

3. Have fun and experiment.

Experimenting with the type of shots you take and your post-processing is how you find your personal style of photography.
